Waterfront Director

Reports To: Camp Director & Assistant Director

Number of Positions Available: 1 (for all 8 weeks & Staff Training)

The Waterfront Director will oversee all aspects of our waterfront programming, safety, and emergency response preparedness. The Waterfront Director plays an integral role in our camp's Leadership Team. 

 General Responsibilities:

  • Ensuring the general safety of campers and staff at the waterfront.
  • Supervising the waterfront staff and ensuring that programming is run in a safe, fun, and responsible manner.
  • Managing any waterfront emergencies.
  • Lifeguarding duties
  • Assisting with program needs.
  • Perform all other duties and roles assigned by the Director or Assistant Director.

  Specific Responsibilities:

  • Lead the organizing and setting up of the Waterfront.
  • Attend daily leadership team meetings as scheduled.
  • Be on call and prepared to assume a leadership role in crisis management/emergency response.
  • Ensure that all policies and procedures for the waterfront are strictly adhered to by all campers and staff.
  • Train staff how to safely supervise waterfront activities. Lead practical drills to ensure all staff knows safety protocols and can act with speed and effectiveness in emergency situations.
  • Manage rotational lifeguard schedule and waterfront specialty staff schedule.
  • Conduct an evaluation of campers’ swimming ability, and to ensure that campers who are not strong swimmers wear PFDs during free swim.
  • Set, and clearly explain to each new group of campers, all waterfront rules and procedures. 
  • Plan and lead alternate activities when necessary (rain days, Colour War days…).
  • Conduct daily checks of facilities, equipment, and first aid supplies and report any issues to the Director.
  • Ensure that the waterfront area is kept tidy and safe and that all equipment is properly stored and cared for.
  • Participate in camp-wide special events. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Current National Lifeguard Qualification (NLS). (NL waterfront would be an asset.)
  • Current CPR-C and First Aid certification 
  • Current Certified Pleasure Craft Operator
  • Vulnerable Sector Background Check

Recommended Qualifications:

  • Valid G drivers license
  • Excellent working skills including communication skills, organizational skills, and attention to detail.

Employment Period:

  • One week of Staff Training (June 24 - June 29, 2024)
  • 8 weeks of Camp (June 30- August 24, 2024)
  • Employment in May, June, Sept & October is available for staff interested in working at the camp for retreats and group rentals.
Waterfront Director

Lifeguard

All staff are required to live and teach our Elite Camps core values. They are responsible for the safety and security of each camper in their care and must follow prescribed program standards in order to ensure the highest level of care. Due to the dynamic nature of summer camp demands, all staff must understand that additional duties may be assigned as required.

As a part of the larger camp community activity instructors also expected to actively participate and provide supervision during All-Camp Activities throughout the week. This includes program periods that may not be outlined on daily schedules, such as meals, rainy day activities, special days and in the cabin.

The Lifeguards, along with the Head of Waterfront, will also be responsible for leading the emergency response team to practice regular training sessions.

General RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Mandatory attendance for Staff Training Week.
  • Work as part of a team to foster a safe, fun, and supportive camp environment grounded upon Elite Camps’ mission and values.
  • Provide supervision and lifeguarding for all waterfront activities.
  • Understand the special safety concerns involved with the waterfront and how to respond in the case of an emergency.
  • Participate fully in the daily schedule and in camp-wide special events.
  • Demonstrate positive attitudes, respectful communication, appropriate attire and grooming, and a diligent work ethic.
  • Maintain unwavering, infectious energy.

Specific RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure that the safety rules are followed on the beach and in the water.
    Maintain and store all waterfront equipment properly and report any issues to the Waterfront Director.
    Keep the beach clean and orderly.
    Participate in testing the swimming ability of all campers the first day of each week.
    Live in the camper cabins and work cooperatively with cabin staff to create a positive cabin culture.
    Provide supervision of campers in other program areas as required in the daily schedule.
    Cabin supervision during Free Periods and Night Duty as scheduled.
    Assist in delivering "Rainy Day" programs.
    Perform assigned role in Camper Drop-Off and Pick-Up.
    Attend daily staff team meetings as scheduled.
    Be punctual and respect the schedule.
    Willing to set goals and take feedback in daily sessions with Senior Staff and adjust accordingly.
    Learn and abide by all policies and procedures to ensure the health and safety of campers and staff.

Wages: Summer wages vary depending on age, qualifications and experience of applicants. Room and board are included.

RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be 17 years old or older
  • Valid NLS certification
  • Current CPR-C and First Aid certification
  • Current Criminal Background Check
  • Current Certified Pleasure Craft Operator (recommended)
